What Does the Bible Say About Disappointment?

The Bible speaks often to disappointment, even when it does not use that exact word. Scripture shows people facing delay, loss, confusion, and hopes that did not unfold the way they expected.

What the Bible says

  1. Scripture
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.
    Proverbs 13:12

The Bible openly acknowledges how painful delayed hope can feel.

  2. Scripture
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.
    Psalm 34:18

God's nearness is emphasized when the heart is wounded or crushed.

  3. Scripture
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.
    Romans 8:28

Scripture teaches that God can still work through things that feel painful or confusing.

A grounded way to understand this

Disappointment does not mean God has stopped working. The Bible allows space for sadness while still pointing toward trust, patience, and hope beyond what is visible.
