What Does the Bible Say About Heartbreak?

The Bible does not treat heartbreak as small or embarrassing. It speaks often about broken hearts, grief, and the nearness of God when a person feels emotionally wounded.

What the Bible says

  1. Scripture
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
    Psalm 34:18

God is described as near to the brokenhearted, not distant from them.

  2. Scripture
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
    Psalm 147:3

Healing is pictured as something God actively does, even when it takes time.

  3. Scripture
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
    Matthew 11:28

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to bring their heaviness to Him.

A grounded way to understand this

Heartbreak is not proof that God has left. Scripture repeatedly shows God drawing near to people in their most wounded places.
