What Does the Bible Say About Discipline?

What the Bible says

1. Scripture

   Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

   Discipline begins with willingness to receive instruction.

2. Scripture

   Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

   Discipline can feel difficult in the moment, but it produces fruit later.

3. Scripture

   But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection.

   Paul describes self-discipline as bringing the body under direction.

Biblical discipline is not harshness for its own sake. It is training that leads to wisdom, strength, and a more ordered life.
