A grounded way to understand this
Views differ: some say Christ proclaimed victory to fallen angels or the dead; others that He went to the righteous dead (Abraham's bosom) to bring them to heaven; others read these texts differently altogether. All agree on the essential: His suffering was finished at the cross ("It is finished," John 19:30), and the descent, whatever its nature, was triumph, not torment. Note: "hell" in these passages translates Sheol/Hades (the realm of the dead), not the lake of fire.
