Can Christians Lose Their Salvation? A Bible Answer

What the Bible says

   And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

   Jesus promises His sheep eternal life with a double negative for emphasis: they shall never perish, and no one can snatch them from His hand.

   Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

   Paul is confident that God finishes what He starts: salvation is God's work, and God does not abandon His projects.

3. Scripture

   For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance;

   Hebrews warns soberly that falling away after enlightenment is a fearful thing: this is the passage the other side weighs most heavily.

A grounded way to understand this

Eternal-security Christians read the warnings as hypothetical or as describing those never truly saved; conditional-security Christians read the promises as conditioned on persevering faith. Both views have godly scholars and long histories. What both agree on: examine yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5), persevere (Hebrews 12:1), and rest in Christ rather than in your own grip.
